📚 Dick Roughsey (Goobalathaldin)

Dick Roughsey, known by his Lardil name Goobalathaldin, was born on Mornington Island in 1920. His working life included stock work on southern Gulf cattle stations and service aboard boats linking Gulf settlements. He became known as an artist and writer, with paintings entering Australian and international collections. His life therefore connects the Gulf’s island communities with its mainland pastoral country. Art, storytelling and cultural knowledge grew from a life that also involved the demanding practical work of moving cattle and keeping coastal settlements supplied.
